Everyday Empathy

“Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another and feeling with the heart of another.” Alfred Adler

Every year I choose a word to help me navigate the new season I am entering. Last year my word was a strength, and I looked towards ways that I could work on my strengths and focus on what I was good at rather than the things that overwhelmed me about what I wasn’t good at.

This year my word is empathy.

Empathy is easily lost in a society when we often experience compassion fatigue because we are exposed to so much information online and on social media.

The dictionary describes empathy as…

the ability to understand and share the feelings of another.

I sometimes find it easier to be empathetic or feel deeply about situations and people that are far away from me, rather than those in my everyday.

This year I am focusing on being empathetic to those in my every day, like my children trying to listen more and understand their feelings. My husband to listen to understand rather than reply.

How does empathy look in your everyday?
